What does EDM stand for in machining?

Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM), also known as spark erosion, is a non-traditional manufacturing technique where material is removed from a workpiece through a series of repetitive electrical discharges or sparks. These sparks occur in a dielectric fluid between an electrode and the workpiece. This method excels at creating intricate shapes and detailed features in materials that are too hard or too delicate for traditional cutting tools. EDM is particularly valuable for producing molds, dies, and components with complex geometries where precision is paramount.

What is Electric Discharge Machining?

Electric Discharge Machining (EDM) is a machining technique that employs electrical sparks to cut metal by melting or vaporizing it. The cutting is accomplished through electrical discharges between two electrodes separated by a dielectric liquid and subjected to variable electrical voltage. Wire electrical discharge, a type of EDM, is utilized to create elaborate and precise shapes and contours in components that might be unattainable via traditional CNC machining. One benefit is that EDM is suitable for machining materials like heat-treated steels, alloys, and special metals, which are typically hard to machine precisely and with quality control using standard methods. The EDM process can generate complex shapes with extremely tight tolerances. It can also precisely machine narrow slots and small holes, making it an essential asset for manufacturers and various engineering and industrial applications.
